Jake Kellen grew up in a small Texas town where he played baseball and regularly attended the Church of Christ. After his brother got a guitar for Christmas, and several people complemented him on his singing abilities he became interested in music. One of his first appearances on stage was at Camp Blue Haven, a Christian camp in New Mexico, where he performed in the talent show. Jake went on to hone his musical skills, and became a popular entertainer on the campus of Lubbock Christian University. Although Jake had big plans of playing professional baseball he soon gave them up and hit the road with his guitar.
Jake was influenced by many of the country artists he grew up listening to in the 90’s. He especially points to people like George Straight and Garth Brooks as people he would like to model his career after. When asked about the current state of country music he told me that he enjoys many of the artists, but misses the more traditional country sound.
Jake credits his faith with grounding him and allowing him to continue in the music business which he says, “can be brutal.” He feels that God has blessed him with all his talents, and he relies on God to carry him forward. He says that he has never set down to write a song about Jesus, but he writes what is on his heart and the fact that he is saved often comes through.
Heart of Gold is the title of Jake’s third full length album. On it he sings about subjects that are dear to his heart including faith & family, growing up in a small town, and Texas’ famous dancehalls. The title track on Heart of Gold is an incredible song about the blessings of family. Jake says he wrote that song in about 30 minutes one morning as he was overwhelmed by feelings that he would soon become a father. These feelings and emotions are clearly conveyed to the listener with lyrics like “God made a baby in the image of his own, She’s got her daddy’s fight and her mama’s heart of gold.” Jake is not only a gifted songwriter, but also a talented vocalist. Country music fans should take note of this up and coming star that has already made his mark on the Texas music charts.
