Resurrected Living
"What are you going to do with your new resurrected life? This is the heroic question." Richard Rohr

Pride in Independence

Jackson is learning to walk.  He has been holding on to objects and walking around for awhile, but now he is to the point where he is standing on his own. He will take a step or two before he goes crashing to the ground.  Laura and I try to help him by holding on to his hands, but he does not like this.  He wants to do it on his own.

As humans and especially as Americans we take pride in independence. When someone achieves something great on their own we applaud their great achievement.  As children we learn about people like Charles Lindbergh (The Lone Eagle), and Amelia Earhart.

The world teaches us that independence is a virtue and in some areas this is true, but not when it comes to Christianity.  Rather than place value on independence, Christianity teaches us to value relationships.  We must learn to live and grow in a community that we call church.  As Christians we cannot ignore those who are in need, but we must befriend them and help them. Most importantly we have to learn to rely on God.  Christianity teaches us that we are not the center of the universe.  It is not all about me.  We have a responsibility to others and we have a responsibility to God.

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.”  Prov. 3:5
