Isaac Newton By Mitch Stokes

Thomas Nelson has begun a new series of books entitled Christian Encounters.  This series seeks to present biographies of important individuals throughout history who were also dedicated Christians.  We are given insights and background into great decisions, experiments, discoveries, etc, that these people made, while also learning about their dedication to God and Scripture.  This series began with biographies on Jane Austen, John Bunyan, Winston Churchill, Saint Patrick, and Isaac Newton.  Later this year they plan on publishing biographies on Johan Sebastian Bach, William F. Buckley, J.R.R. Tolkien, and some others.

I received a complimentary copy of the Christian Encounter biography of Isaac Newton from Thomas Nelson Publishers.  I was not required to write a positive review of this book, but I am glad to do so.  This biography along with others in the series are not long exhaustive works, but they give us a good idea of who the person was, while highlighting their major accomplishments.  I learned a lot about Isaac Newton from reading this biography, and I relearned some of the things I had forgotten.  Science is not one of my strong points, so I appreciated the author explaining Newton’s theories in laymans terms.

This biography was easy to read, while not compromising scholarship.  It was written by Mitch Stokes who holds a Ph.D in philosophy from Notre Dame.  He sites his sources and it is easy to see he did his research.  Although this book is well-researched it is a book that is very readable.  An experienced reader could easily finsih it in a few days.

What I like about this book is that it presents the story of Isaac Newton while highlighting his dedication to Christianity.  Christianity is not the focus of the book, but it lets us see that this important man was a dedicated Christian, and that his faith drove him to accomplish many of the wonderful discoveries he made.

I highly reccomend Isaac Newton by Mitch Stokes.  I think this book along with the rest in the series would be a great addition to a church library or a home with children in junior high and high school.  It is also a great book for people interested in science, history, or important figures in Christianity.  If you would like a good read and if you want to know the truth about the apple falling out of the tree, then pick up Isaac Newton by Mitch Stokes.
