Brief Thoughts on the Purpose of Worship

Worship has several purposes.  We are responding to the love, grace, and mercy God has shown us.  We are praising God, the Creator of all things.  God is the reason, purpose, and focus of worship.  We worship God because of who He is and what He has done.  A secondary purpose of worship is what we receive from it.  God is first and we are second.  If this ever gets turned around our worship will be perverted.  We receive many things from worship.  We are edified, encouraged and uplifted.  We enjoy the fellowship of Christians.  These are all important, but the most significant thing that happens to us in worship is we become like God.  Through worship we begin to look more like God.  Because we were created in the image of God and not someone or something else we become more human through the worship of God.  When we do not worship God we are not living up to our full potential.  When we worship something other than God we become less human.  As we become more like God our lives become a living sacrifice.  What happens in worship helps our entire life to be an act of worship, holy and acceptable before God.

“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”  Rom. 12:1
