The End of Poverty?

“The End of Poverty?” is a powerful documentary about how poverty has increased and not decreased. Most people would probably not guess this is the case. With all the advancements in society why can we not control poverty?  This film traces the roots of modern day poverty to colonialism. Since that time organizations like the World Bank and the IMF (International Monetary Fund), as well as certain governments, have promoted and enforced policies that have made poverty worse. Because we live in a global economy our actions have an impact on other people around the world.

Every Christian should watch this movie. Every Christian needs to know that 16,000 children die each day because of starvation or starvation related illnesses. God has much to say about how we treat the least of society. As Christians we need to make sure we are doing everything we can to alleviate this problem.  We live in a complicated time in history. Because of globalization our actions may negatively or positively impact someone half-way across the world. We can no longer ignore problems simply because they occur hundreds or thousands of miles away. Although we may not possess the power to solve the world’s problems we can make a difference.

One way you can make a difference right now is by buying fair trade products. Purchasing fair trade products helps to alleviate poverty by giving the farmer a fair wage.
