Are You Living Like a Star?

“Do all things without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” Philippians 2:14-15

Each night before going to sleep my four year old son climbs into bed and recites his memory verses and says his prayers. The above verse is one of the verses he recites. In his version it says that we are to “shine like stars in the world.” Even at four years old he understands this concept. He goes outside at night and he sees how the stars light up the night sky. Later he goes to bed, recites this verse, and understands he is to be a light just like the stars in the sky.

Although my son already knows he is supposed to be a light in the world, I do not believe he understands the darkness between the stars, and how we are to be a light “in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation.” Our calling as Christians is a difficult one. We are to live in a way that illumines the darkness we find ourselves surrounded by. This not only refers to the Biblical morals we are to hold to, but it also refers to how we respond to the world. Paul instructs us to do these things “without grumbling.” The world has plenty of critics and cynics. This will not convert the world. We are to imitate the love (agape) of Jesus. The world has love (phileo), but their love (phileo) is dependent upon receiving something in return. I will be your friend if you be my friend. Christians love (agape) regardless of what we will receive in return. We show people the grace that was shown to us. The world does not know this love (agape). This is the love (agape) we must display in our daily lives. This love (agape) will bring light to a dark world, a world that repays evil for evil and insult for insult (1 Pet. 3:9). This love (agape) will change the world and create more stars to help light up the dark sky.
