Musings

croissant-newspaper-and-tea

After taking the month of July off from Musings it is now back. Here is your weekly dose of links and other things I have found interesting this week.

Hauerwas on War and Politics

Stanley Hauerwas, one of America’s greatest theologians, is never dull. Some may view his statements as controversial, but Hauerwas is always challenging our thinking. His intent is never to cause controversy, but instead to get us to think more Biblically. Like a good ethicist he is always asking us questions that make us a little uncomfortable. Here is a recent interview he did on some very controversial subjects. Check out Politics, Patriotism, and Pacifism: An Interview With Stanley Hauerwas

How Does Your Church Measure Up?

K. Rex Butts has a very good article this week on how we measure our church. He says,

Whenever numerical growth of a church outpaces the spiritual formation of the church as a people sanctified by the Holy Spirit, problems are bound to rise.  This doesn’t mean that numerical growth isn’t important… in fact, we should welcome such growth.  However, let’s not sacrifice the spiritual formation of the church on the altar of church growth.

Before You Hit Share, Read This

I know this should go without saying, but we Christians need to commit ourselves to always being truthful. This includes the things we share on social media and the e-mails we forward. I have preached this message for a long time, because I have been on the receiving end of many e-mails filled with false information. One of the many downsides to politics is that individuals will do anything they can to win, including lie. When Christians engage in the sharing of false information, not only is it sinful, but it hurts our reputation and our image among the very people we are trying to reach. The Myth of the Soul Mate

One of the more damaging ideas to marriage and relationships today is the idea that we all have a soul mate. This is the idea that there is one perfect individual out there for you in the world and all you have to do is find them. The truth is there are no perfect individuals and I am glad to see people begin to push back on this idea. Check out My Husband is Not My Soul Mate

Homosexuality and the Church

The issue of homosexuality is not going to go away and churches need to think through how they are going to respond. Wes Woodell offers some helpful thoughts on the subject. I recommend you read Homosexuality and the Church

Noah

I have no idea what to expect from Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, but I cannot wait to see it. I take it as a good sign that they have chosen a church group as the first test audiences. Check out Church Groups Get Their First Glimpse of Noah

The Wild Feathers

I recently discovered The Wild Feathers who have a new album coming out in August and will be playing this year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival. I do not know much about them, but I like the fact that they do covers in random places and post them to Youtube. Here is there cover of Bob Dylan’s You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere
